Flooding Interview

Photos taken by @scumverga at Purgatory in Brooklyn on April 14th, 2023.

Originally I went to this show to see that band "High" and they also played a sick set and then i stuck around for Flooding and i was completely blown away. I didn't know who they were at all and didn't know what to expect but they were amazing, their set was incredibly loud and emotional, and some stuff reminded me of Slint (which is funny cause i also saw some guy there with a Slint shirt)(that dude looked so cool). I got to talk to them a bit after the show and they were really nice, apparently they were finishing off a tour and played that Julia's War Fest a couple days before and funny enough they were going to the Duster show the next day as well (4/15 - Brooklyn Steel).

*(me and @nerdloser went to the Duster show the next day and saw them there as well, that Duster show was amazing)

They have a self titled album out on Spotify thats beautiful and sad and feels like the kind of album you'd wanna listen to when you're hiding in the woods in moments when life's a bit too overwhelming and apparently theres a second album in the works as well, which by the sound of the songs they played at Purgatory sounds like its gonna be way louder and more emotional, which i'm very excited for personally.

Personal favorite: Gomez

( apparently about Gomez and Morticia from The Addams Family *question 10* )

1. What are your guys names and what instrument do you play?

Rose Brown is on guitar and vocals, Cole Billings is on bass, and Zach Cunningham is on drums

2. Where are you guys from?

We’re from Lawrence, KS

3. Where did you get the name Flooding?

The name Flooding came from the exposure therapy in psychology called flooding where a patient is exposed to their fear all at once with no warning. Like if someone had a phobia of spiders they’d walk into therapy one day and they’d have to stick their hand into a jar of spiders.

4. How did you guys all meet and start the band?

Cole and Zach went to high school together and had been jamming for a long time before I proposed starting a band to Cole, who I met in college at KU. I had been releasing solo acoustic music under the name Window Seat and wanted to write darker music for a full band. So then we started practicing the songs I wrote in Zach’s garage and quickly recorded the first album.

5. There were a good amount of songs from your set at Purgatory that I didn’t recognize, are those songs gonna be released in a new album or ep maybe?

Since we recorded our first album so soon after becoming a band our sound didn’t have much time to develop, so we’re already over playing those songs live, which is why almost all the songs we played on tour are new ones that are going to be on a second full length album.

6. I saw that you guys have played with bands like Hotline TNT and They are Gutting a Body of Water, what would you say are some of your favorite bands that you’ve played with?

We’ve been really lucky to be able to play with a lot of our all-time favorite bands like GEL, TAGABOW, Horse Jumper of Love, Portrayal of Guilt, and Wednesday to name a few. It’s hard to pick favorites since we like playing with bands of all different genres. But it’s really gratifying to be recognized like that by people we look up to.

7. How did you guys get put onto that Julia’s War Fest? That Lineup was insaneee.

We had played with TAGABOW once in Kansas City and Doug was nice enough to include us on the lineup for our Philly show on tour. It just worked out really nicely.

8. What was your favorite show from this tour?

It’s really close but we all agree that Minneapolis, MN at Pilllar Forum with Interlay was our favorite.

9. What would you say is your favorite song to play from your set?

Zach - Transept Exit. Cole - Muzzle. Rose - Silver Gilt

10. Is the song Gomez about Gomez from the Addams Family? (this might be a reach idk but that’s what it made me think of lol)

Correct. It’s about Gomez and Morticia’s relationship. How it’s fucked up how much they love each other.

11. How would you describe the music scene in Kansas?

The music scene in Kansas City is thriving. I think we have created an environment where everyone feels like they belong and people who aren’t yet in the scene are welcomed into shows. We also play loud as hell in Kansas City which is something I noticed people in all the cities we went to on tour don’t do.

12. Favorite Venue to play in Kansas?

Our favorite actual Kansas venues are The White Schoolhouse and The Toilet Bowl in Lawrence, KS. Our favorite Kansas City venue is Farewell/Howdy by default because we’ve never played at any other venues there besides house venues that are no longer operating.

13. What did you guys think of the Duster Show?

The Duster show slapped

14. Are there any bands that you guys all love that you’d hope to play with in the near future? Which ones?

I think if Unwound plays more shows we would all die to play with them some time. We don’t actually intersect on a ton of favorite artists and a lot of our favorite artists wouldn’t make sense for us to play with them because they’re an entirely different genre. Our music taste is all over the place but Unwound is a no-brainer.

15. What are some of your favorite bands?

Rose - Coco & Clair Clair, Sonic Youth, Blind Girls, Daïtro, Harvey Milk, The B-52s. Zach - Swans, Sleep, and Love, Claire. Cole - Helvetia, Sleep, Wednesday, Abandoncy, Nightosphere

16. What are some good bands from Kansas specifically?

Abandoncy, Nightosphere, Midwestern, Weaponize Chomsky, Missouri Executive Order 44, Big Water, Blanky, Nerver.

17. Any big plans for Flooding in the near future?

Some more short tours, another 2 week tour, and another album this year.

FLOODING

- Self Titled Album: "Flooding"

Heres a picture i took of Zach (their drummer) after the show.

Funny anecdote is that you can go on the Flooding Instagram and see their "Zach Reviews" highlight where he does an in depth review of restaurants and food spots that they encounter on their tour adventures. Its fire lol

*also another funny anecdote is that i think he looks so much like Ledwing lol (iykyk)

(Ledwing if by any chance you read this, this is who i was telling you about lol ^^^^)
